Tips on boosting confidence (and why it’s important)

What you see isn’t always the truth. Someone who presents themselves as a care-free and self-assured person on the outside may well be the total opposite on the inside.

So if you lack self-confidence and struggle to feel satisfied with yourself, then do not feel alone. We all lack confidence in some way or another.

As easy as it is to wallow in our self-pity and tell ourselves we’re never going to be a cool, calm and collected high-achiever, feeling sorry for ourselves is counter-productive. You need to find the confidence inside, and then things will start falling into place in the way you always imagined.

Why is confidence so important?

Great things happen when you start believing in yourself. When you are confident in yourself, then others will be too. Feeling comfortable with who you are and knowing you have worth brings out the best in you. Your eyes will start to sparkle, and the smile on your face will no longer be a routine reaction – it will be real. Confidence is contagious. It will bring you success, and if you work hard enough, it can bring you happiness, too. Here are some tips on how to boost your self-esteem…

Tip 1…Step out of your comfort zone

Let’s start with the most important one. The things you dread and fear the most are the answer to building your confidence. The more you step out of your comfort zone and start doing things that cause anxiety, stress or negative thoughts about yourself, the more you will realize you had no reason to fear them in the first place. Stop avoiding, and start throwing yourself in at the deep end.

Tip 2…Start questioning your inner-saboteur

We all have insecurities – even the people we like to think are ‘perfect’. The critic inside our head can say some nasty things about us sometimes, so it’s time to block that voice out and start questioning what it has to say. Next time you overthink something negative, stop and think about how truthful and rational that particular thought is. Can you change it? Is it your fault?

Tip 3…Start exercising

We cannot stress this tip enough. More often than not, exercising is the key to happiness that you never knew you had. Whether it’s joining a gym or starting a new hobby, physical activity is essential for maintaining not just a healthy body, but a healthy mind, too. If you set yourself fitness goals and achieve them, then your mood will be lifted, your stress will diminish, and your confidence will sky-rocket.

Tip 4…Set achievable goals

It’s important you always set yourself realistic goals. Don’t set yourself up to fail. Consider the ambitions you have and only set out to achieve them if you know you have the resources to make them happen. Too many people give up at the first hurdle because the hurdle they placed in the way was far too big to jump over. Aim big, but start small. A stream of successes will result in bigger, better dreams, but it takes time to get there.

You are your biggest enemy. Stop being so hard on yourself. Having confidence is not an overnight thing – it can take years to get to where you want to be. So be patient and stay committed to the long term goals you want to achieve. The possibilities living inside yourself are endless.
